Subject: WHERE THE ACTION IS
As much as I loved both HULLABALOO and SHINDIG( SHIN was
cooler),I wonder why there's been no attempt to make
available the old WHERE THE ACTION IS episodes.I'd RUN
home everyday after school to check out the great
artists, cool locales (Santa Monica seemed VERY appealing
to a kid from Roanoke,Virginia in January).I thought
ACTION was a nice compliment to the other music shows in
the mid 60s.There was a lot of GREAT music on TV at the
time;over and above the aforementioned there was Lloyd
Thaxton,Roanoke's own SATURDAY SESSION,of course
BANDSTAND,and a John Byner show on Saturdays; kinda a
poor man's ACTION, Then, on Saturdays,in '68,IT'S
HAPPENING. ED SULLIVAN on Sunday nights-I'd wade through
Borstbelt comedians and jugglers in order to watch 5
minutes of the Doors or Vanilla Fudge.
Have I missed ACTION?Is Dick Clark waiting 'til we're all
blind before he makes us run out and spend a zillion $ on
re-issues?
By GOd,I'd pay to own some ACTION episodes.Knowing what I
know now,I remember seeing Tommy Roe,lip-synching to
"It's Now Winter's Day" at some ski-lodge in Colorado,or
some-place cool!AH,such memories.
Let's not forget the SMOTHER"S BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR. What
bliss.GREAT counter-culture with fab music-Turtles,The
Association,Donovan,Jennifer Warnes,Jefferson
AIrplane (Grace Slick in blackface singing "Crown of
Creation"-it didn't get much better than that-Pissed the
old man off mightily)
.....I watch THE DAILY SHOW now for the same comic
relief..sadly,no music.John Stewart,are you snooping
about?
ACTION forever,
Freeman Carmack

All this talk about Hullabaloo has caused me to search
around and dig out what I think is the theme song from
that show, which I've [done]. I don't know anything
about the circumstances surrounding the recording of this
piece of music, though.
I've also [found] a second terrific little theme song,
for a show called Where The Action Is. It's performed
by Freddy Cannon, who sings over an instrumental track
that sounds like a Gary Lewis & The Playboys
track--only with some extra oomph.

Thanks, Ms. Kaye. I wasn't aware of Vinnie Bell's
involvement before. This is great information.

Hello Everyone,
I say "bravo" to Don Charles' article on The Archies.
When I was 10 years old, I spent my allowance buying two
Archies LPs, "Everything's Archie" and "Jingle Jangle"
(with that wild color chips cover). I listened to them
endlessly. When I was 14, I tossed the LPs after a
friend teased me about having them. Now that I'm older
and wiser, I sure wish I hadn't caved to peer pressure.
I still have my singles, though. They sound just as
inviting as they did thirty-plus years ago!

Picking up Don Charles' suggestion for a contemporary
Jeff 'n' Ellie collection by country artists...Whilst I
can see that production values and respect for the
quality of the songs would be maintained, experience (eg
The Beach Boys' "Stars & stripes" collection) shows that
it is all too easy to loose something of the feel and
meaning of the songs. These are NYC songs, street corner
songs, high school songs that carry a lot of pleasantly
essential 'Brill baggage' with them, at least for
oldsters like me who bought them all way back then. Sure
not all the covers on the Polygram Publisher CD are too
hot, but I'd rather see contemporary bands like that try
them than for the songs to get the sometimes too-cloying
country treatment. Listen again to Blondie's cover on
"No Exit" and go back to Holly & the Italians on "Just
for tonight" (OK not a G/B song) for the feel that I
think I mean. I too would love to see a G/B collection,
but not just any one...
In case you haven't already, everyone should check out
the fab sound and track listing of Sundazed's The
Millennium "Magic Time" 3CD set. Listen for the lovely
jazzy "Lead Me To Love" and splendid "A Time For
Everything" on disc one.
