hello all, i'm new to the list. i've been reading the digest
for a couple of weeks now and getting into the flow of things.
i found the list after doing a websearch for info on the
majorettes and the spectropop website came up. i was instantly
hooked. so, here is about me:
my name is jason, i'm 24, i live in portland, oregon. i am
currently unemployed (yay america!) and the closest thing i
have to a job is listening to records all day long and the
occassional dj gig. i'm into a lot of the stuff you folks
talk about around here...especially the beach boys, sonny
bono, the association, lee hazlewood and a wide array more.
if you want, you can look at my website, which is at
http://www.geocities.com/beppo38 it's not very good. also,
you can read some of my reviews (user name "tinks") at
http://www.musicaltaste.net
i shall leave you with a bit of self-promotion. hope you
don't mind.

I shudder to imagine the sardonic smirks playing across the
program directors' faces as they hear these tracks spin over
and over and over again on their stations.

The album is indeed a revelation: to the McKinleys, to
Wirtz, and to the uniquely kinetic approach to the girl
group sound which are all captured so effectively on it. Is
this style a British specialty, or have a few isolated
examples simply been pulled into one place by the compilers?
My only complaint is with the awkward title -- somehow I can
only remember it as "Flashbulbs 'N' Hair Buns." But that's
splitting hairs, and this collection is to be missed at your
own risk.

For those who wanted to hear them I've played both sides of the first Knack
45 to musica:
Time Waits For No One (Mike Chain-Dink Kaplan)/I'm Aware (Mike Chain-Dink
Kaplan) - The Knack, Capitol 5774: 1967, Produced by Nick Venet
The A-side here is a cult classic; the flip's pretty cool as well. I'll
leave these up for a week and then replace them with the third and then the
fourth 45s (and the second one - "Softly Softly"/"The Spell" if I can
locate a copy).

I concur. I've just taken my first steps around 'Jack Nitzsche
At Spectropop', a fascinating place! Good to have a website
devoted to one of the greatest names in our type of music. Most
famous perhaps (well, to me anyway) for his association with
Phil Spector, he was a major force over a long period in his own
right. Martin's site contains a continually evolving discography,
loads of information, some great reminiscences, and is
particularly well indexed. I'd recommend a look at:
http://www.spectropop.com/JackNitzsche/index.htm
You will be there for some time!
Thanks to everyone involved.

Toni Wine divorced Chips Moman several years ago. I hear
she's remarried and is once again a New York resident.
Lest anyone forget . . . Toni Wine was the first prominent
female vocalist to be featured on Archies records, and she
also did the great backing vocal on Gene Pitney's "It Hurts
To Be In Love."

Dear Members,
Do you have time on your hands and enjoy cruising the net?
The Spectropop Team, wilting after a rush of recent activity,
need your help. What we require is a volunteer to search the
internet and download images to illustrate a major article
currently being readied for publication on the Spectropop
site. Can you handle that job in exchange for nothing but
gratitude? If so, please email admin@spectropop.com and
we'll get back to you with more details.
Thanks in advance,

I haven't seen an Alexys album but I can tell you she was
the lead singer of THE CANTERBURY TALES on Dot.
I do have a single by them:
THE CANTERBURY TALES - Gretl/A Broken Piece Of Crystal
(Dot 16893), issued in May 1966.
Bonnie Guitar, of "Dark Moon" and Dolphin/Dolton Records
fame, gets producer credits.

I play, to this day, her Colpix 45 "My Boyfriend's Coming Home
For Christmas". It's great, especially when she talks in the
middle of the record in her native New Yorker accent about how
'hawd' it is to be without him the rest of the year.

Toni Wine is an amazing talent, though officially, to the
"good times great oldies" set, she is a no-hit wonder! Yet
she's had a hand in writing so many hits ("Groovy Kind Of
Love", "Candida", "Black Pearl", etc.) and has been featured
on so many hit records -- the ones mentioned above, plus the
early Dawn records (before Telma & Joyce from the Debonaires
came aboard). "Angel Baby" by Dusk is another moment of fine
Wine. I am looking for her Atco single of "He's Not You", a
song that was also recorded by Gwen McCrae (in one of her
finest deep soul moments). If anyone has Toni's version to
play to musica (or to sell/trade) please speak up!

Thanks Jan,
Actually, that sounds more like it. 1961 Ralf Bendix
written by American J Parker in 1960 with German Lyrics
by Joachim Relin.
I think I will melt my Udo Spitz version into an ashtray.

Hi Tommy:
There IS a yahoo group gdawg6788 that is dedicated to the
Shangri-Las. Unfortunately, Mary has nothing to do with the
music business, so she is not affiliated with any talent
agency of any sort. The Shangri-Las that perform today in
the US contain neither Mary or Betty. Mary works in Manhattan
for a furnishing design company. The guy that produced that
Brill Building documentary was real lucky that Mary granted
him the interview because she is less than accommodating to
journalists or any one else that contacts her at work to talk
about her former singing career. Plus, some fans that I know
got her number at work and called her and the woman went
ballistic!!!!! And that's called--sad!! On the other hand,
I saw her at the screening for the Brill Building documentary,
and she was posing for photos with everybody and was the life
of the party!!!!! And that's called--glad!!!

For my money, the best Top 40 station ever was KHJ Boss Radio,
Los Angeles from 65-69. Robert W. Morgan and the Real Don Steele
were incomparable!! Not to mention the music, great contests
(e.g. the Big Kahuna), and those Johnny Mann Singer jingles.
By the way, KHJ had a whole instrumental package as well.
Twelve or thirteen one minute cuts featuring the logo in
different arrangements -- all custom made by Jack Nitzsche.

Hi Jimmy, dunno much, other than the New Society contained
pre-Monkees Mike Nesmith, and the In Crowd's "Questions And
Answers" is a great little Linzer-Randell-style rip of
Tchaikovsky's 5th.
However, seven on your list (see below) are referenced in
Vernon Joynson's book "Fuzz Acid & Flowers", accessible
online via the Spectropop side menu, '60s 70s Beat Psyche'

Well how odd. Here I am writing about 'Soft Rock'!
In reply to Jimmy's request for record info:
The Three Rivers 'Shillings' with Jackie DeShannon's
"Children And Flowers", could be the same group as the
Fontana "Shillings", known for their version of "Just For
You, Baby" (the cover version without the PS writing credit)
- sure sounds similar.
"The Barrock Sound Of The New Society" album lists all the
info (and more!) that you could possibly wish to know about
them.
Produced by Randy Sparks (New Christy Minstrels, Back Porch
Majority etc) who seems to have conceived the project. The
group members were: Carol Stromme 'Sally Sincere', Del Ramos
'Red Cloud' (brother of New Christy, Larry), Ted Anderson
'The Handsome Stranger', Gary Miller 'Crazy Gary Miller',
Carol Kimzey, Alan Parker & Larry Hickman 'Blue Eyes'.
Most of the LP arranged by Lincoln (Wonder Boy) Mayorga, with
Jack (Specs) Nitzsche on a couple and one by Mort (The Raging
Bull) Garson. The music? It's well-crafted 'Sunshine Pop', not
really my taste but…
The Stained Glass: I have one other 45 by them, (bought for the
strange hope it would be 'surfy'), "My Buddy Sin" this and the
B side wr Jim McPherson, produced by Danny Davis. Ditto last
comment!

can also be heard live on the Net?
You know, that impossible fantasy station that doesn't play
the usual chestnuts ad nauseum...
I prefer to listen to real, live free-to-air stations via
the Net: they have more of the feel of real radio about them.
When I was a kid I used to dream of pulling in stations from

being able to do just that over the Net.

As Martin suggested, these Shillings (without the 'c')
appear to be the Fontana 'Shillings'. [Martin, do you have
the "Just For You Baby" 45?]
From "Fuzz Acid & Flowers":
Hailing from Allentown, Pennsylvania their "Laugh" is a
melodic and plaintive punk ballad with ringing guitars.
A cover of the Beach Boys "Barbara Ann" also made it onto
a Fontana acetate. "Children And Flowers" was a cover of
The Critters track.
45s:
1 Just For You Baby/Laugh (Fontana 1543) 1966
2 Children And Flowers/Lying And Trying (Three Rivers 701) 1966
3 Goodbye My Lady/The World Could Stop (Three Rivers 6778/9) 1967
4 Strawberry Jam/Wild Cherry Lane (Virtue 2504) 1968
Compilation appearances include: "Laugh"
on The Psychedelic Sixties, Vol. 1 (LP) and
The Cicadelic 60s, Vol. 3 (CD).
