I'm sittin' here watchin' the Beach Boy movie for just a
minute as I channel surf around (I'm taping it and
watching all four hours in one sitting next weekend when I
can cut out the commercials and drink Three Stooges Beer
and eat cool ranch doritos), and what I see is the moment
after the "Surf City" session when Brian gets to meet Phil
Spector for the first time, and WHOAH!! What IS that
AWESOME instrumental track that the "wrecking crew" is
playing?!?!?!? Holy CRAP! Who made it? When?

Man o man, I could listen to a SOLID HOUR of stuff like
that, and not get tired of it.

p.s. the bass player was a cutie. Looked just like Ms. Kaye.

    Dear AVIRS,

I'm sure a lot of people here are jumping on this one...
Marionette was recorded by Art Garfunkel on his Watermark
album which featured nine other Jimmy Webb songs. Webb
himself has recorded a version on his "And So: On" album
which is so far condemned to CD oblivion. (All his other
albums are released now, at least in Japan).

The Phil Spector documentary "Wall Of Sound" 50 minutes,
was postponed, just not ready yet for a little while...a
longer version is also being prepared for the UK. This was
a very important era in the 60s and Phil was good to work
for back then, I know the public will be very satisfied
with this well-done documentary, a fine film depicting
from our interviews etc. just what did happen on Phil's
    historical dates.

    >>>>>>There were other engineers at Gold Star besides
Larry Levine who, as we all know, was Phil Spector's.<<<

I played on nearly every date for Phil Spector in the 60s
at Gold Star (if not every one). Stan Ross was the only
besides Larry Levine, he was Phil's first engnieer and
when he went to Hawaii, Larry did it and then Phil
insisted upon using Larry the whole time after that.

    >>>Oh, you played 12-string? You did some nice work on
that album, then. There's some very pretty 12-string parts
on there. What kind of guitar gear (as opposed to bass) did
you use on the '60s? My guess is that the 12-string on
"Freak Out!" was not a Rickenbacker, maybe a Fender XXII?
    Glenn<<<

Glenn, it was my Guild elec. 12-string, I had my repairman,
the great Milt Owen....there's no-one since who can take
    this wonderful talented man's place....he was a oner....I
bought a Guild 6-string elec. and had him switch it over
to 12-string with special hot pickups, he loved that box...
this took the place of my earlier Gibson acoustic 12-
string which I put a D'Armond pickup in (Barney Kessel and
I got the same idea at the same times in recording when
that 12-string craze hit, "electrify the 12-string", was
    about 1960 I believe).

     To Jamie LePage:

Jim Hilton was a Gold Star studio engineer in the late
1960s. He engineered Iron Butterly's "In A Gadda Da Vida"
album at Gold Star. Ultra Sonic studios in NYC is also
listed on the credits. Also Jim Hilton engineered the
Turtles' "Battle of the Bands" album which contained the
hits "Elenore" and "You Showed Me" entirely at Gold Star
    in 1968.

I'm not really sure if Buffalo Springfield's "Expecting
To Fly" was recorded at Gold Star. The song may have been
recorded at Sunset Sound. I listened to the drum echo on
that song, and it sounds somewhat like the same drum sound
that you would hear on the Doors' signature song "Light My
Fire". The Spector connection to "Expecting to Fly" is
that the strings were arranged by Jack Nitzsche. Plus the
stereo mix on that song sounds very elaborate-like it was
mixed from eight tracks. Gold Star at that time had only
    three or four tracks.

I'm glad that the LA Musicians Union feels that way. I
tried to do some research a few years ago on some
recording sessions on a company in Nashville that is out
of business and I was told by the Country Music Hall Of
Fame that the Nashville Musicians Union only kept session
records for five years to ensure the musicians got paid.
They didn't give the material to the Country Music Hall Of
    Fame either.

Hello to all my fellow SpectroPoppers! I would like to
share in my excitement with you. As you know I host an
oldies radio show on the Internet for the past three years.
Treasure Island Oldies has just been featured in the
February 28th issue of Macleans Magazine, Canada's weekly
news magazine (Macleans is to Canada what Time is to the
U.S.) Since the article came out the number of people
coming to the web site and listening has more than
    tripled. Here's the address

Hope you get a chance to check it out.

    Hi Scott,

I don't know if it is definitive or not, but on the
Spectropop website there is a four page Carole King '59-
'69 writer discog listing songs, artists and catalog
numbers. It is pretty extensive. Click on the Gerry Goffin/
Carole King link in the Brill Building section and look
for the orange Goffin/King album cover.

    Hope this helps!

We are trying to produce Ellie Greenwich's play "Leader of
the Pack" and require those 24 songs on tape. Would anyone
have an idea where I could obtain the music? We are a
Community Theater and this is our first Musical and of
course the rental did not include ten of the songs we need,
the 17-18 young people involved are falling in love with
this music and the band will not be ready to rehearse with
the crew until the end of March. It is now Feb 24th Please
    Help.
