There's this pretty funny new cartoon on Nickelodeon called "The
Angry Beavers;" I want to point out its very nice use of music,
which may be of particular interest to this list. The AB theme
song is a faux-Tijuana Brass number (upbeat, with the two-trumpet
harmonized lead); plus, the musical director employs the same sort
of musical puns that Carl Stalling used to do on the old Looney
Tunes (like, for instance, when the angry beavers get shot into
outer space, as they float around in their space ship you hear
strains of Dvorak's "New World Symphony").

Even better, though, is the way in which the director uses old
sixties numbers, beautifully recreating the backing track but
*leaving the melody line out*, thus making it possible for the
cognoscenti at home to play "Name That Stack O Track:"

During an episode when the beavers were cavorting in a Water World
amusement park, the background music was "I Get Around."

During an episode when the beavers were playing in a back-water
jug band, the background music was "Do You Believe In Magic."

The Tammys' (Lou Christie's 1st background GG) "Egyptian Shumba" was
issued on a UA 45 in 1964, but came out in the '90s called "Land of
    a Thousand Dunces."

Gene Page, Phil's arranger for "You've Lost That...." passed away
on August 24...Gene did a lot of work for Phil; especially the
string sections on a lot of Phil's material...Phil would concoct
an "idea" of what the strings should sound like ( or any
instrument ) he'd write them on paper sometimes and that rough
sketch was given to either Jack Nietzche or Gene ( or whomever was
doing strings)...the major difference with Jack and Gene was that
Gene employed the use of cellos and violas to round out the sound
while Jack kept these instruments to a minimum-knowing that Phil
would eventually re-dub the sounds until they were "rounded out"
with no chance of ever hearing a distinct viola or cello...they
already knew Phil's technique so it was easy to work with any of
them...if you listen closely to the bridge in Be My Baby, you'll
hear Jack's string arrangement style..most of the Righteous Bros.
material had Gene doing strings and these are less in intensity
but more audible and distinct: example-listen closely to the
almost fade out after the false ending in You've Lost That...
Gene's string arrangement is distinct and more pronounced than
Jack's...both are excellent arrangers however, in my humble yet
    seasoned opinion!

I have just got through all of the digests and it was
really an interesting and funny read, especially the
letters about the Phil Spector and Celine Dion ses-
sions and the reports from the trial : Ronnie- Phil.

I got some questions about bootlegs and Spector.

    The 3 titles I got:

A cd called "Phil & Friends, vol 1" contains various
outtakes from diff. Lennon sessions, some hard to
find tracks like Love`s "Lovers" , the rare single " Do the
Screw part 1 and 2" etc.

2 LP`s from US : "Uncle Phil, The Other Story..." and
"The Famous Wall Of Sound" contains pre-Philles
and various sound-a-like. Nothing special at all.

    What else exist ?
Any cd,tapes, lps with *outtakes* from the Philles period?

BTW i`m a new subscriber to this list. My all time
heroes (in music) are Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, Syd Barrett
and Richard E James (Aphex Twin).

    Regards
    Peter

<<Interestingly enough the single most tossed away LP was Herb
Alpert's "Whipped cream and other Delights"...how can this be?? On
the grounds of its cover alone it's a keeper.>>

Seems to me it's just fallout from the millions of LPs Herb moved
back in his day, most of them to the sort of people who'd dispose
of old records almost as easily as they'd throw out old magazines.

At the Tower where I work (in downtown Chicago), the CD of Whipped
Cream... still sells very nicely, so it's not as if the album's
    been forgotten.
