Message: 1 Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 22:41:29 -0000 From: Mike Edwards Subject: Re: Baseball songs There have been a number of posts listing titles of baseball songs recently but one has been overlooked. It's from the show "Promises Promises" and was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The title is "She Likes Baseball". In fact the show had a number of strange titles in the music score; "Turkey Lurkey Time" and "A Fact Can Be A Beautiful Thing" were others. It also had some great tunes, though, with "Promises Promises", "Knowing When To Leave" "Christmas Day" and "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" being outstanding examples. Hopefully we'll move on to football songs when I'll be able to get a plug in for my man, Terry Bradshaw. I'll always remember John Bon Jovi appearing on a warm-up show and telling the viewers that his band was on the same label as Terry Bradshaw; he was proud of it. So what singer made a football record and appeared in a football TV sitcom? But not at the same time. Mike Edwards -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 2 Date: Fri, 15 Jul 2005 05:29:23 -0000 From: Clark Besch Subject: Re: The Olympics - no, not the group Speaking of sports themes, ever since "Rock & Roll--Part 2" became THE anthem, we've had "We are the Champions", "Centerfield", you name it. One song Mick will know that should be a "no-brainer" for this category is "Blockbuster" by Sweet. The song was GREAT when it was out and still is. I can imagine a hockey crowd getting quite wild to the siren intro leading into that great guitar opening and the "a- AAH" repetitive singing and then edit to the end with the "Blockbuster, blockbuster, block-bus-ter" and fade into player introductions. Why not? It's like a "Rock & Roll Part 3"! Clark PS. I want to add my condolences to Britain's tragedies after the olympics announcement. I was actually hoping New York City would NOT get them because of such a possiblity. Sad thing. -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------
Message: 3 Date: Thu, 14 Jul 2005 23:56:12 -0000 From: Julio Niņo Subject: Pat Lewis; the Adorables; Barbara Mercer; the Corvells and some Poppy-Bossa for the Summer. Hola everybody. Mick Patrick: > Great singer, Pat Lewis, with some excellent releases to her > credit. "Look At What I Almost Missed" - fabulous record! And one > could dance to it... Iīve been searching a little and I found out that I have that song (which I think was also recorded by The Parliaments) in a CD compilation. Iīm not sure I could dance to it, but I have not doubt about how much I like it. Patīs voice sounds ethereal and very sensual in it. The notes of the CD include a little info about Pat (although compared to Simonīs revelations the result totally insipid). It seems that Patīs first recording was The Adorablesī "Deep Freeze" on Golden World. According to a monumental and extremely interesting web article about that label, ( http://tinyurl.com/bb62u ), the Adorables were Pat and her sister Diane with another two sisters, Joyce and Betty Winston. They recorded three singles for Golden World. The web contains also a nice picture of Pat Lewis with Barbara Mercer. According to the fascinating article, Pat Lewis also released a solo single on Golden World, "Canīt Shake it Loose"/ Letīs Get together". And talking about Barbara Mercer, I read in the article that she released in Golden World (GW27 and also GW 28), a version of the marvellous Van McCoyīs song "Doinī Things Together", originally titled "The Things We Do together". Maybe itīs the original version. I really would love to listen to it. And continuing with Pat, Paul asks: > Is this the same Pat Lewis who sang 'No one to love' ?... Yes, Paul, itīs the same singer. "No One To love" is included in the same Detroit compilation in which i discovered "Warning". And finally, I want to thank Mick for playing in musica the lovely "One (Is Such a Lonely Number)" by the Corvells. I never get tired of this poppie-bossa sound. The perfect sound to ambient my lazy mood these summer days. In fact I confess that a moment ago, in the still of the night, Iīve been playing it very softly and dancing to it with kike (my cat). Just wanted to let everybody know that Darlene Love has recently taken over the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the Broadway show "Hairspray". I'm getting my tickets now. I saw the show with the original cast and it's a great show. With Darlene in it now, it will be phenomenal. Has anyone seen her in it yet? Can't wait to hear her sing "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and "I Know Where I've Been", both of which are showstoppers! There's an article about her on Broadway.com under "Hairspray". Hello Mike, "Adonis" was written by George Goehring and Ed Warren. -Released july 1959 by Gale Gibson (RCA 47-7564) -Terri Stevens released it the same month (Felsted 8586) -Terri Dean released a version in august 1959 (Laurie 3032) -Petula Clark's version was released august 1959 (Pye Nixa 15220) -Jacky Noguez's version was released october 1959 (Jamie 1137) -Dalida released a version in France november 1959 (Barclay 60186) So I go for Gale Gibson as the original version on "Adonis". -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

"Adonis" by Terri Dean got some scattered airplay in St. Louis, Mo., mainly during the wee hours of the morning. It was a phantom record I searched for until accidentally finding it in the 70's. Since then I have been amazed at the number of covers this song received back in 1959....all failing to chart. The songwriters must have been frustrated beyond belief. Everything about this song sounds right for its time. The Jacky Noguez version is an accordion instrumental, and quite good. It seems odd that so many artists jumped on this song's bandwagon to no avail. Perhaps that may account for why no particular version built up enough steam to chart. Weird coincidence, but just today my son and I were listening to one of our all-time favorite songs, "My Old School" by Steely Dan, and he asked who the horn players were. No one I'd ever heard of, but they were arranged by, yep, Jimmie Haskell. John Fox -------------------[ archived by Spectropop ]-------------------

Space became available, so Ms Clementino is there. Please enjoy this great 1963 revival of the Terri Dean/Petula Clark 1959 song, "Adonis". I bet that would be great to see & hear with Darlene Love doing the role. When you saw Hairspray with the original cast, I was informed that the actress who played Tracy also is a cast member of the soap opera "One Life To Live". I am referring to Kathy Brier. Is this correct? Does Kathy still do the role? I saw it here in Toronto and with a different cast yet I enjoyed it. I had a 3rd row seat and the stage prop featuring the record bin had 45s fastened to the outer panels. I just could not help but take note to see if the labels fit the time period...lol.
